Tax Update (July 2009)

More fraudsters impersonate HMRC

HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) have been made aware of new attempts to defraud individuals by fraudsters impersonating HMRC.

The latest attempt requires individuals to provide personal and banking details in order for a repayment of tax to be made. There is obviously no intention to pay you anything but rather to empty your bank account or use your credit card.

HMRC will never advise individuals via email or to complete tax rebate claims on line.

Another scam is asking taxpayers to 'update your account to the new EV SSL certification' with the intention of stealing user ID and passwords.
