-Health & Safety Update (August 2010)
Maintenance – can you afford not to?
The Health and Safety Executive, in partnership with a number of
other organisations including the European Agency for Safety and
Health at Work have launched the UK's involvement in the Healthy
Workplaces European Campaign on Safe Maintenance. The Healthy
Workplaces Europe-wide campaign for 2010-2011 aims to promote safe
and healthy workplaces by encouraging organisations to plan their
maintenance in a structured way.
Maintenance doesn't just cover plant and machinery. It also
encompasses the structure of the workplace, furniture and
facilities, ensuring they operate safely and that their condition
doesn't decline. Regular planned maintenance can also guard against
sudden and sometimes catastrophic failure.
To encourage organisations and individuals to actively
participate in the campaign, a wide variety of campaign material is
available from the HSE website (http://www.hse.gov.uk/) and the
European Agency campaign website. (http://osha.europa.eu/en/campaigns/hw2010/)
