Construction firm fined over asbestos removal
A Norwich-based construction firm has been fined after pleading
guilty to breaching the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2006.
East Anglian Construction, an arm of Peter Colby Commercials,
was found to have breached the regulations whilst carrying out work
on Diamond House in Norwich between 2007 and 2008.
Despite not being licensed to carry out asbestos removal, the
firm – who were contracted to Norwich City Council - removed
asbestos insulating board tiles from the ceilings of the building
on two separate occasions.
A city council health and safety officer, Susan Thomas, said,
"The magistrates clearly viewed this as a serious breach of the
regulations. Six charges in total were laid and the maximum fine
available to the court was made in each case.
"These were not trivial health and safety matters and I hope
that others who may be thinking of acting in the same way think
again.
"The dangers of working with asbestos are well known and have
been for many years and those in control of premises should know
what they are dealing with," she added.
East Anglian Construction was fined £30,000 and asked to pay
£10,203 in costs to Norwich City Council.
