EA report details environmental performance of businesses
The Environment Agency (EA) has published a report detailing the
environmental performance of businesses across England and
Wales.
The comprehensive review highlights that, whilst most sectors
are improving their environmental efforts, focus needs to be
shifted to those which are still falling short.
Fifty-five per cent of industrial sites achieved the top 'A'
rating, which signals good environmental performance and
management. This was an increase from 47 per cent last year. Almost
nine of ten sites achieved either an 'A' or a 'B' ranking.
Waste sites were named as a key focus for the EA over the coming
year, as the body identified that they cause half of all serious
pollution incidents which happen on regulated sites.
More than 800 illegal, unregulated waste sites were also
pinpointed by the EA, which can cause serious risk to the
environment.
The EA has pledged to assist the poorest performing sectors by
providing guidance and more regular site inspections. Those sectors
which have performed well will have fewer inspections.
Dr Paul Leinster, Chief Executive of the Environment Agency,
said, "Our analysis shows that most companies have a good
environmental record, despite the difficult economic conditions.
And serious pollution incidents have reduced significantly in the
last five years.
"Green business is good business because it can help reduce
costs and enhances reputation with customers. But we will continue
to target the poor performing companies and illegal activities that
cause damage to the environment and pose a risk to communities," he
added.
