EC launch consultation into working hours
The European Commission (EC) has launched the second stage of
its consultation relating to the EU Working Time Directive.
As part of the review of working hours across the EU, the EC is
in consultation with employer representatives and workers at EU
level.
Alongside the ongoing consultation, the body has also presented
a report detailing how the Working Time Directive would be legally
implemented in Member States.
This second stage of consultation requires opinions on
suggestions made to review and change EU working time rules, as
well as providing feedback on findings garnered from the first
stage of consultation.
Specifically, views on topics including how best to tackle
excessive working hours, timing of minimum rest periods and on-call
time, are required.
By investigating working time trends, the EC report also offers
a roundup of the social and economic impacts the current rules have
on Member States.
EU Commissioner for Employment, Social Affairs and Inclusion,
László Andor, said, "This second consultation with employers' and
workers' representatives focuses on examining their views so as to
facilitate an agreement on revising the EU rules on working time.
The current situation is not sustainable politically or
legally.
"We need a fresh start and a new EU-level approach to working
time. It will not be easy, but I am confident that the new report
on the implementation of the current rules will help us move beyond
past discussions and find a balanced solution that mirrors the real
needs of workers, consumers and businesses in the 21st Century," he
added.
