Poultry unit prosecuted following odour breach
A Sibsey, Boston-based poultry unit has been fined following its
failure to comply with odour management regulations.
Moy Park Ltd, who ran the unit located on Sibsey's Main Road,
failed to follow advice given by the Environment Agency (EA) or
comply with its environmental permit. The permit allowed intensive
poultry rearing of up to 200,500 birds and required the firm to
follow conditions which would protect local communities and the
environment from being affected in any way by the unit.
However, as a result of failing to follow odour management
guidance, neighbours located near the unit were forced to put up
with foul smells for several months in 2009. The EA recorded 143
complaints about the odours.
Mrs Anne-Lise McDonald, prosecutor at Boston Magistrates’ Court,
said, "It failed to follow its own odour management plan.
"The company did not maintain the site infrastructure, follow
good housekeeping practice, carry out odour monitoring or properly
investigate the cause of odours coming from the site," she
added.
Moy Park Ltd pleaded guilty to breaching the conditions of their
permit and was fined £30,000 alongside costs of £12,123 to the
EA.
Rebecca Tremain, Environment Officer said, "This was a case of
poor site management that impacted on the community."
