SEPA launches waste data consultation
A public consultation has been launched by The Scottish
Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) detailing a waste data
strategy for the country.
The consultation contains proposals for introducing a 'good
quality' waste data strategy in order to better manage Scotland's
waste and use its resources to full effect.
Covering the 2011 to 2025 period, the strategy is being
developed in a joint partnership with SEPA, Zero Waste Scotland and
a range of external stakeholders.
Once finalised, the strategy aims to give an improved
understanding of what waste is produced, allow businesses and
councils to measure their waste management, and monitor progress
towards waste targets. It is also hoped that the strategy will
encourage greater public awareness of waste management issues.
SEPA's Head of Environmental Quality, Martin Marsden, said, “We
are determined to provide the data that Scotland needs in the
future to inform the management of the waste that we all
generate.
“To do this, we are seeking views on the proposed strategy to
ensure that it is based upon a good understanding of the strengths
and weakness of the current data and an agreed understanding of the
potential for improvement,” he added.
The consultation is open until 2 May 2011.
