Compulsory carbon reporting a must, says CBI
Environmental update 07/07/2011
The Confederation of British Industry (CBI) has urged the
government to roll out compulsory carbon reporting for all UK
businesses.
This reporting would allow companies to both monitor and manage
their carbon emissions effectively, said the CBI, which also asked
the government to align the reporting to existing rules governing
the measuring of emissions.
The CBI made the call as part of its submission to DEFRA’s
recent consultation relating to the measuring and reporting of
emissions.
CBI Director for Business Environment, Rhian Kelly, said,
“Mandatory carbon reporting is a great way of making boardrooms
aware of the savings possible through energy efficiency.
“To be effective, it is important that the government phases in
the introduction of mandatory reporting and makes the process
simple for companies to follow."
“Given that many companies already report their emissions under
other schemes, the Government should get rid of overlapping
regulations so firms don’t end up getting bogged down reporting for
a variety of different schemes,” added Ms Kelly.
The government must decide whether to roll out the compulsory
carbon reporting by April next year, in order to comply with the
Climate Change Act 2008.
