Code of Practice launched for internships
Employment Law & HR update 25/07/2011
A new Best Practice Code has been launched by The Chartered
Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) and the Institute of
Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW).
The government’s Common Best Practice Code for High-Quality
Internships has been developed by the Department for Business,
Innovation and Skills Collaborative Forum on Fair Access to the
Professions. Its aim is to provide guidelines for companies looking
to offer high-quality internships in a bid to access young talent
pools.
The Code details advice for internship pay, recruitment and
supervision of interns and their ongoing mentoring.
CIPD Chief Executive, Jackie Orme, said, “Internships are a
valuable resource for those looking to improve their employability
before taking their first step on the career ladder, but they must
be fully accessible and operated to a high standard if they are to
be of maximum benefit.
“We hope that it will be effective at encouraging employers to
provide the kind of placements that are rewarding to both young
people and organisations,” Orme added.
Orme went on to say that a correctly handled internship can
provide a great opportunity for employers to track down new talent
and to also allow them to widen their horizons.
