Simpler approach to employment law called

Employment Law & HR update 28/07/2011
The Confederation of British Industry (CBI) has called on the
government to introduce a new approach to employment law.
This new take on the topic would help to introduce improved
employment relations and boost flexibility within the workplace,
the body said.
The CBI has launched the 'Thinking Positive: the 21st century
employment relationship report' – which was created in conjunction
with recruitment firm Hays.
The report investigates how the employment relationship has become
far more flexible over time. It comprises video interviews with
staff and employees about the positives of flexibility and strong
communication, whilst acknowledging the role these factors have
played in helping to lower private sector job losses.
The body is now urging the government to include this new flexible
approach in all future employment law.
CBI Director-General, John Cridland, said, “Traditionally when
making employment law governments have tried to specify every last
detail of what should go on in the workplace.
 With a strong base
of employment rights already in place, we simply don’t need the
state telling us how to manage every aspect of basic human
relations."
Mr Cridland also said that the government should 'adopt a simpler
approach to future employment law, one which maximises choice for
employers and staff and plays up the strengths of our flexible
labour market.'
