Work experience guide launched
Employment Law & HR update - 5/7/2011
The quality of work experience must be improved, in order to
increase young people's employability, according to newly-released
recommendations on the matter.
The Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD), has
released a new work experience guide in association with Jobcentre
Plus. The Work Experience Placements That Work guide - which has
been written to support the Government’s initiative entitled 'Get
Britain Working' - is intended to help employers to provide
'meaningful' work experience to young job seekers.
Amongst the recommendations contained within the guide includes
how to structure the work experience, how to support and supervise
work experience candidates, and how to help them enter working
life.
Skills Policy Adviser for the CIPD, Katerina Rüdiger, said,
“Employers can be reluctant to employ a young person with no work
experience as they see them as a risk rather than as a productive
employee, especially in difficult economic times.
“Managed properly, though, a work experience placement can
benefit both the individual and the employer. This guide will be a
great tool for employers wishing to run quality work experience
programmes, which in the long-run should go a long way in
dispelling any negative perceptions,” she added.
