Plug skills gaps in UK firms, CIPD urges government
Employment Law & HR update 03/11/2011
A new report from the Chartered Institute of Personnel and
Development (CIPD) has called for the government to offer
encouragement to UK firms to plug skills gaps.
The Work Horizons report, entitled ‘Good Management – A New
(Old) Driver for Growth,’ found that the "uncoordinated and
ineffective policy reviews" of the last few years have not filled
skills gaps in UK companies.
Prior to the upcoming Growth Review, the government is being
urged to support companies in recognising gaps across their
management and leadership hierarchy.
The report warned that, if improvements are not made, the skills
profile across the UK will fall even further behind that of other
OECD countries.
Author of the report - and the CIPD’s skills policy advisor -
Katerina Rüdiger, said, “Firing underperforming workers does not
address the root cause of this problem; the government should
instead focus on supporting employers to improve management
capability.
“One third of the UK’s workforce has managerial responsibilities
so it’s not difficult to see the potential for improved management
and leadership capabilities to unlock productivity and address the
problem of workplace performance in a way that works for everyone:
employers, individuals and the UK economy,” Ms Rüdiger added.#
