Business Department’s dismissal proposals “wrong approach” according to Business Secretary

Employment Law & HR update 22/05/2012

Business Secretary Vince Cable has branded proposals for “compensated no fault dismissal” for small businesses “the wrong approach”, in a press interview on Monday. Proposals are currently the subject of a “call for evidence” consultation issued by BIS, the government department headed by Dr Cable.

Dr Cable said he “did not want to scare the wits out of employees” with such changes, which are said to be proposed in a report by a government advisor, Adrian Beecroft, expected to be published later this week.

The comments indicate disagreement within the coalition about employment law reforms, but are particularly surprising coming from the head of the department responsible for an ongoing consultation.
