Unite calls for more H&S inspections
Health & Safety update 01/05/2012
The Unite union is calling for a greater number of health and
safety inspections to take place in workplaces in order to reduce
the number of accidents affecting workers.
It claims that the number of deaths at work is underestimated at
the moment, and that there could be as many as 1,400 per year,
compared with the 141 stated in the Health & Safety Executive
(HSE) report for 2011.
Unite’s calls for extra inspections has come in direct response
to government plans that involve cutting health and safety
regulations. Unite’s general secretary, Len McClusky, commented,
“The government is hell bent on reducing health and safety
regulations, and standards. It will lead to fewer inspections, less
enforcement and more deaths, injuries and ill-health at work.”
Unite claims that the government should be increasing the amount
of health and safety regulations and inspections in order to ensure
that the number of workplace deaths falls in the coming years. It
also wants more emphasis put on the roles of union safety
representatives.
Unite has support from the Trade Union Congress, which has
called for a day of action to campaign for the protection of
workers.
