Employers unprepared for pension auto-enrolment
Employment Law & HR update 11/06/2012
Around 44 per cent of British companies have taken no steps to
prepare for pensions auto-enrolment, according to new research,
prompting urgent calls for more to be done to help them
prepare.
The research, carried out by the benefits consultancy, Jelf
Employee Benefits, found that just 31 per cent of the companies
surveyed said that they felt prepared for the advent of the new
pension regulations. The introduction of auto-enrolment is being
staggered, but a large proportion of employers will have staging
dates to adopt the new regulations in 2013.
Jelf’s head of benefits strategy, Steve Herbert, said that it
will be crucial for employers to be prepared for the move, and they
must start taking action sooner rather than later.
“We are very concerned about the number of employers that still
appear to be in denial about this issue,” Herbert told Personnel
Today. “Auto-enrolment is not a theoretical exercise. Employers
need to understand that it is going to happen, and preparations
need to be made in the very near future.”
The figures obtained by Jelf said that, while not prepared, many
employers do now know more about the staging dates than they did at
this point last year. In a similar survey taken in 2011, only 69
per cent of employers knew when their staging dates were, but that
had risen to 88 per cent this year.
