HSE Chair reappointed
Health & Safety update 27/06/2012
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has reappointed Judith
Hackitt CBE as its chairwoman.
Hackitt was first appointed to the position in October 2007, for
a five-year term. Her current appointment will see her hold the
role for three further years, until 2015, in a position that will
see her oversee efforts to reduce and investigate risks in British
workplaces.
Authority
She is a long-standing authority figure in British industry,
having previously served as the director general of the Chemical
Industries Association and also as a Health and Safety Commissioner
between 2002 and 2005.
She welcomed her reappointment to the position, stating that it
is “an exciting and demanding time for both the organisation and
the health and safety community more widely.”
Clear Focus
She added, “My focus is clear – ensuring that we continue to
drive down death, injury and ill health in Britain’s workplaces,
while delivering changes to the regulatory system that make it
clearer and simpler for employers to understand what they need to
do to manage serious risks.”
Employment minister, Chris Grayling, said Hackitt’s performance
in the role over the last five years has been dedicated and
impressive.
He explained, “Her challenging of poor decision making in the
name of health and safety combined with a pragmatic, risk based
approach to regulation and enforcement will ensure that the
deserved reputation of HSE as a fair and open regulator is
maintained.”
