IOSH launches workplace heart disease guidance

Health & Safety update 14/06/2012

The Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) has launched new guidelines to help employers to be aware of heart disease in their workplaces.

The IOSH has published the information to help companies promote health living among their workers and to support those who are recovering from or being treated for heart disease. Around 1.5 million people in the UK have suffered a heart attack, and the guidelines will help with those who have or are planning to return to work.

The heart disease Occupational Health (OH) Toolkit includes information on causes, signs and symptoms and different types of heart issues. It will give tips and advice on rehabilitation and how to accommodate someone who is returning to work, and will also signpost the key organisations and sources of information for more help, as well as provide legal advice on employers’ statutory duties.

IOSH Research and Information Services Manager, Jane White, said that every employer could be affected by heart disease among their workers, so it is crucial that they are well informed.

“Our information on heart disease was an essential module to add to the toolkit because heart disease can affect anyone at any time of their life and it’s a duty of employers that they have the health and wellbeing of their employees at the forefront of their priorities,” she said. “Employers are now more than ever recognising that they have a corporate social responsibility to provide a healthy working environment for their employees.”
