Review of health & safety guidance documents
Health & Safety update
The Health & Safety Executive (HSE) has invited comments on
proposals to review the detailed guidance available through
Approved Codes of Practice (ACOP). Following on from the Loftstedt
report, a range of ACOPs will be reviewed or combined into a new,
more comprehensive document. The updated ACOPs are aimed at
providing businesses with a better understanding of their legal
obligations. The proposed changes will be carried out in stages,
with the first segment due to be completed by the end of 2013.
Updated guidance will be provided in plain English on topics
such as legionella management and hazardous substances, with
particular reference to low risk industries. Guidance on how
businesses can comply with the requirement to carry out a suitable
and sufficient risk assessment will also be reviewed.
In addition to the guidance review, the HSE has also proposed
that the number of pages in each ACOP is limited to 32 pages in
most cases.
The consultation period is open until 14 September this year.
Further details are available from the public consultations page of
the HSE website.
