Employment Law FAQ

Continuous Service

I am due to distribute new Statements of Particulars of Employment but would like to ask first what is the difference between the continuous service and commencement dates?

The commencement date is the date an employee started working in a particular role. The continuous service date is the date an individual started employment with the organisation. For example, if an individual is promoted or moves to a different role the commencement date will be the date they started in that role. Also, if you have taken over an existing business and retain the employees, the continuous service date will be the date they started with the original employer.
