Royal Bank of Scotland Mentor round-up - Your monthly news

February 2019

Hello there!

UK workplaces are generally very safe – but are they “healthy”? With workplace stress and musculoskeletal disorders on the increase and the HSE increasingly focusing enforcement activity around workplace conditions and worker health (as opposed to accidents), it’s worth taking a look at your own business to see if improvements can be made. Senior Consultant Peter Nicholls gives his insight.

Closely linked to workplace health is the concept of “wellbeing”. Increasingly businesses are realising that this isn’t just a “nice-to-have” but essential to increase efficiency and reduce the cost of accidents and absences. We consider some quick wins.

And having a workforce that reflects the customers it aims to serve is increasingly important. Diversity starts with non-discrimination but its value is not merely defensive – having a workforce that resembles the diversity of society is likely to make better business decisions and attract greater loyalty. We take a look.

Valentine’s Day reminds us that workplaces are all about relationships. What happens when they break down or work against the interests of the business? Senior consultant Caroline Crampton-Thomas gives us the benefit of her experience as an employer’s “agony aunt.
